Deep Thoughts and Observations by Ken

I am getting this sinking feeling we are all being scammed. We have heard of 20,000 up to 40,000 deaths, Rapes, Murders, Mayhem, widespread looting and shooting. Now the death toll is expected around 200-400. During the week after the hurricane we were hearing that bodies were strewn all over the place. Now we hear that searchers have found very few bodies except tragically for 40 elderly patients in an old folks home.

Could all the stories we have been hearing be total fabrications? This story in the Boston Globe is one of many that are starting to question the veracity of all these horrific events.

BY NOW THE IMAGES and stories of looting and mayhem in New Orleans--the residents ''shopping" for nonessentials in an abandoned Wal-Mart, alleged rapes in the Superdome, a shot fired at a rescue helicopter--have been burned into the brain of every television watcher and newspaper reader in America. But do they give us an accurate picture of the aftermath of the flood?

In fact, if criminal violence were indeed rampant in New Orleans after Katrina hit (setting aside the taking of food, water, bandages, and other necessities of survival), that would contradict much of what sociologists have learned in a half century of research about such situations. ''The evidence is overwhelming," says Enrico Quarantelli, an emeritus professor of sociology and the founding director of the Disaster Research Center at the University of Delaware, ''that in the standard natural disaster or technological disaster"--like a chemical spill--''you're not going to get looting."

Some obviously happened because we have pictures from the media. But pictures alone cannot show the real magnitude of a problem. Pictures can be used to blow things completely out of proportion where unscrupulous politicians and others can use them to their advantage or they can be fabricated out of whole cloth.

Some of it could be sensationalism from the media to trump up ratings but not all media outlets could have colluded to deceive the American people. No this would have had to be something planned and coordinated.

Mayor Nagin said he personally saw bodies everywhere. Where are all the bodies you told us about Mayor Nagin? Where is the evidence of the widespread murders and rapes? We have only heard anecdotal stories about these things happening, but no actual eyewitness accounts.

There are two factors that could have motivated the Mayor and others to make the situation seem much worse than it was, politics and money. Those who scream the loudest usually have something to hide, and the guilty are always the first to point fingers. Mayor Nagin was doing a lot of screaming and finger pointing.

Democrats wasted no time in blaming President Bush for all the death and Mayhem that may not of happened at all. All the horror stories surely motivated the congress to quickly approve the 50 billion dollar aid package. Without the trumped up stories would the congress have been so generous? The feds better keep a sharp eye on that money and make the mayor and local officials account for every dime. Otherwise the raping and looting may have been perpetrated on the American people themselves.

Maybe he needed all the body bags for all the bodies that were buried around New Orleans BEFORE Katrina hit?

Mayor Nagin is a dumbass.

Ooh... So not PC of you, Brutus.

I'm just grateful the numbers projected in the initial panic phase turned out to be so overblown. The number of dead may climb and any number over zero is too high, but it could have been so much worse.

The Louis Armstrong International Airport, The French Quarter, Hotels and other services and businesses are already reopening, no documented cases of rape or murder at the Superdome has been found so far (open to corrections if I'm wrong), Mayor Nagin talking about declaring bankruptcy for the city (even though billions in aid and recovery money is available to the city to pay its bills)...

Wouldn't a sound assessment of the disaster area have been a good thing here? ;~D All I can say is, THIS IS GREAT NEW!! I (for one) love it when a disaster ends up being less horrendous than originally feared. Of course, those who stand to profit from the worst of it don't see it that way. Someone needs to ask Mayor Nagin how his family is enjoying Dallas. ;~D

You disappointed that the death toll doesn't seem as high as first feared? Interesting viewpoint.

I'm no fan of Nagin -- he was a Republican up until he wanted to be elected mayor of a Democratic city (his roots might explain his cluelessness, eh?), but preparing for the worst and having it not be that bad seems like, oh I don't know, a GOOD thing to me.

Hmm... I think he was saying just the opposite, actually. Only the demagogues are disappointed the numbers weren't larger.

I dunno. If I saw fifty bodies floating around, all bloated and rotting, I'd swear that the death toll was huge. Even if it's a knee jerk reaction to the death toll, and the count is way less, so what. I'd think that was a good thing. Don't you? Are you now blaming lefties for the initial high estimates? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm................. Yeah, I guess if you're reading Malkin, GOP Bloggers, et al, no freakin wonder.

Spin spin spin around and around and around spin spin spin.

Ya know, this is getting old. It's bull crud. It's moronic. Yeah, and stupid.

Blaming lefties for the initial high estimates is no less rational than blaming Bush for everything.

Speaking of getting old:

The more this goes on - Bush getting blamed for everything - the more upside down the thinking of the left gets. On the one hand, he's a dunce lucky to get his boots on the right feet in the morning; on the other, he's the most powerful man in the world able to grasp absolute control, a Machiavellian schemer personally orchestrating everything that happens, certainly everything bad. They've been playing both sides of this so long, it's wearing pretty thin.

I think Ray was counting on finding bodies that had already been burried. You know down here in the South you have to bury people above the ground. This would count for all the bodies he was planning on finding.

Just a bit of info for you. From Reuters:

Louisiana says Katrina death toll now 423
13 Sep 2005 20:36:46 GMT

Source: Reuters

BATON ROUGE, Sept 13 (Reuters) - The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals on Tuesday said the state's confirmed death toll as a direct result of Hurricane Katrina was 423, up from 279 the day before.

The majority were in a morgue at St. Gabriel, with most of the rest in the custody of the coroners of East Baton Rouge and Jefferson parishes.

The revised Louisiana total brought the overall confirmed death toll from Katrina to 648, including 218 deaths in Mississippi and 7 in Florida.

So yes it is a "bit" of a knee-jerk reaction.

Just as the left gleefully (albeit secretly) celebrates high casualty days in Iraq because it helps them prove a point

(btw, if i ever saw one of my loved ones displayed in such a fashion, i'd hunt down the creator of that video and sue the pants off of them.)

I'm sure you even wish it happened. It would be your ticket out of poverty.

You know down here in the South you have to bury people above the ground.

Only below sea level and in other places prone to bad flooding. I don't know 'bout ya'll, but we put our dead folks below ground for the most part in Texas and elsewhere I've been in the South.
